When God’s Favour is Upon You | 6 Activators of God’s Favour

Favour is my name, Favour is my name (singing)

Favour is waking up to see another day. Favour is undeserved grace. Favour is unmerited compassion. Favour is sweet triumph. Favour is a gift. Favour is approval from God that sets you apart so vividly that you find your external environment working for your good. Infact, even when you’re in a storm, favour gets beneath you and lifts you up so that you don’t drown.

I remember listening to this preacher once who defined favour as “working like an ant but eating like an elephant“. I concluded he was trying to explain the unexplainable maybe even undeserved abundance of blessing, not brought about by ones own works. How do you define favour? What is favour to you? I was searching scripture and found some interesting things about favour that I’ll love to share.

6 activators of God’s Favour

  • As a result of an offering

We see this right in the beginning in Genesis 4:4, when Abel gave his offering to God. “And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering”. So here we see an action and reaction. ( Newton’s 3rd Law 😂 See what physics has done to me! ). Okay back to the point. Giving away a part of what we’ve worked for through tithing or maybe even sharing with the less privileged can be a form of giving back to God what he’s blessed us with. And this is pleasing in his eyes as it was for Abel.

  •  As a result of a generational blessing.

I often hear people say ‘ I’m only here today because of the prayers of my mother or grandmother’. The Israelites enjoyed this kind of favour merited since God made the covenant with Abraham. And no matter how many times the Israelites messed up, God still rescued them time and time again. I remember this song we used to sing in Sunday school “Abraham’s blessings are mine”  Is this not favour? 2 Kings 13:23 But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been unwilling to destroy them or banish them from his presence. So there is truth in saying one is thriving off a generational blessing. I know so many families with children from previously poor backgrounds, where it just seemed hopeless but they are now thriving beyond believe in thier adulthood. Other families have experienced no sickness, other families have great unity. Unexplained favour. What does this mean? We have the power to pray now for our children and children’s children. To speak blessings and favour upon them. Isn’t that exciting? God surely answers the prayers of the righteous.

  •  As a result of a calling.

You may be called to become a preacher, go on mission, sing praise and worship, heal, prophesy, even ministering to people just by showing love, the list goes on. When you have a calling upon your life to extend God’s kingdom in some way, favour accompanies that calling. Which is why people flourish when they pursue and perform their calling. We see this kind of favour poured out on Samuel, who was being groomed to become a prophet. 1 Samuel 2:26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people. And Mary, before she had Jesus. Luke 1:30-31 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. We even see this in so many biblical giants like David, Gideon and Moses who had many character flaws, but still had God’s favour because of their calling.

  • As a result of obedience

Obedience to who? Obedience to God and our parents. I’m sure we all know a way ward child who comes from a good home. And the child became that way just because they would not listen. We are reminded of the importance of obedience in Ephesians 6:1‭-‬3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” And obedience works hand in hand with being humble.

  •  As a result of genuinely seeking a relationship with God

To know of God is not the same as knowing God. He says draw near to me and I’ll draw near to you. A protective shield of favour is what you get when you intentionally seek to know God. Proverbs 8:35 For those who find me find life and receive favor from the Lord .

  • As a result of being right with God

Living right by God unlocks favour. We see this through out the bible how righteousness is rewarded. Take Noah for example. God saved him and his family and destroyed everyone else, just because he was right with God. Genesis 6:7-8 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord .

So now let me ask you the question I asked myself. Are you positioned for favour? I’m positive these 6 activators from scripture are just 6 of 100+. God cannot be put in a box. And we can never even begin to comprehend how he works. But the Bible is there to teach us the mysteries of our faith. And having favour does not mean things will just happen with ease all the time. But it does mean we are guaranteed God’s presence through it all.

  1. Favour is a gift. We don’t work to earn it, it’s just shown to us out of Gods benevolence. This 6activators are so true, we claim Abraham’s blessing as a generational blessing. When God calls u, he equips u to fulfill ur mission and obeying Him attracts favour. So is showing love by giving too.
Very insightful post Joan, thanks for sharing! 😊

  2. I love this!” Favour is approval from God that sets you apart so vividly that you find your external environment working for your good.” When you were discussing favour, this scripture came to mind. It reminded me of Romans 8:28 “and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love the Lord who have been called according to his purpose.
